Myanmar holds talks on domestic political issues

Xinhua, April 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Myanmar began a high-level six-party talks in Nay Pyi Taw Friday to discuss domestic political issues including constitutional amendment, general election and peace process.

The six parties involve President U Thein Sein, Commander-in- Chief of the Defense Services Senior-General Min Aung Hlaing, opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) U Shwe Mann, speaker of the House of Nationalities (Upper House) U Khin Aung Myint and parliament member of the Upper House Dr. Aye Maung, who is chairman of Arakan National Party (ANP) selected to represent ethnic nationalities.

The parliament's important motion calling for the talks was first put forward on Nov. 25 last year by a parliament member of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and the proposal was re-made by the parliament in January this year.

The 44-person meeting, the second of its kind after January's 48-person talks, focused on three key points, namely peace process, successful holding of 2015 general election and political stability in the interim period before and after the election.

Myanmar planned a general election for November and before it, the draft constitution amendment law is expected to undergo a nationwide referendum which was set for May.

Meanwhile, a draft nationwide referendum law has been adopted during the last parliament session.

Myanmar's 12th parliament session has been underway in Nay Pyi Taw since Jan. 19. Endi
