Goals either side of halftime from Carlos Carvalho and Guilherme handed Atletico Mineiro a 2-0 victory over Independiente Santa Fe in their Copa Libertadores group match on Thursday.
The Brazilian outfit opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Jesus Datolo's first-time pass was flicked goal ward by Lucas Pratto, allowing Carvalho to pounce and fire into the top corner.
It took until second-half injury time for Atletico to score a second time. A skidding 80-meter kick by goalkeeper Vitor somehow bounced past the Colombian side's defense and into the path of an onrushing Guilherme.
Introduced as a second-half substitute, Guilherme's first attempt was blocked by Santa Fe goalkeeper Leandro Castellanos. But the 26-year-old slotted in the rebound to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory keeps alive Atletico's hopes of progressing to the competition's knockout phase. The 2013 Copa Libertadores champions are third in Group 1, trailing second-placed Santa Fe on goal difference with two matches remaining.
Chile's Colo-Colo lead the group with nine points from four matches while Mexico's Atlas are last with three points. The Copa Libertadores is South America's premier club competition. Endi
