Tokyo shares end higher on earnings hopes

Tokyo shares ended Thursday higher with its benchmark Nikkei stocks index closing at a fresh 15-year high amid optimism over Japanese corporate earnings.

The 225-issue Nikkei index gained 147.91 points, or 0.75 percent, from Wednesday at 19,937.72, the highest close since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.72 points, or 0.36 percent, at 1,594. 19.

Gainers were led by food, pharmaceuticals and retail issues.

The turnover was about 2,349.7 billion yen (about 19.55 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
