2nd LD Writethru: NATO, Afghan soldiers killed in eastern Afghan shooting

Xinhua, April 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

One NATO-led service member and an Afghan soldier were killed in a gunfire exchange in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Wednesday.

"An incident in Jalalabad today resulted in the death of one Resolute Support service member," the NATO-led Resolute Support ( RS) said in a statement.

An Afghan army soldier opened fire at the vehicles of a visiting RS military team in the provincial governor office building.

The incident took place after a meeting between Afghan and RS officials and one Afghan soldier was also wounded in the gun firing which occurred at around midday.

The statement gave neither the nationality of the victim nor the details about the incident under the RS policy, only saying " it is Headquarters Resolute Support policy to defer casualty notification to the relevant national authorities."

The incident is under investigation and further information will be made available as appropriate, according to the statement.

Several NATO-led troops have been killed in insider attacks when Afghan soldiers or gunmen in their uniform opened fire on coalition troops over the past couple of years.

In January, three foreign contractors with the NATO-led forces were killed after an Afghan soldier shot at a military airport in the capital of Kabul.

The U.S. and NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role, which focuses on training, advising and assisting Afghan forces since Jan. 1.

Nearly 13,000 foreign forces are currently stationed in the country and being involved in the RS mission. Endi
