Exhibition held in Russian city on most high-profile robbery in history

Xinhua, April 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

An exhibition devoted to the most high-profile robbery in the city's history was opened Tuesday in Vladivostok, Russia.

The exhibition "Vladivostok's theft of the century in 1891" gathered many fans of the history in Sukhanov's House Museum.

Museum staff told the story of that daring robbery, which was revealed in the late 19th century by experienced Russian investigator Alexander Sukhanov.

In December 1891, Poliakov undermined the Regional Treasury of Primosky Kray and stole 350 thousand rubles of there - at that time an unprecedented amount of money, which was appropriated by the Russian government to refine and develop the region.

"At that time the annual salary of vice governor of Primorsky Kray was 4000 rubles, the Administration's advisor of Primorsky Kray - 3000 rubles, and a guard received 180 rubles annually. Today the stolen amount of 350 thousand rubles would be 850 million rubles," Methodologist of the House Museum and the Candidate of Historical Science, Alexander Wolff told Xinhua.

It took an experienced officer Sukhanov only one month to find the criminals. His efficient investigation and recovery of stolen money was rewarded with the sum of 19 thousand rubles in 1893. With the award fee, Sukhanov bought a house, which is now the museum.

Rare photos of Vladivostok of late 19th century, press-clippings, as well as real banknotes of that time were demonstrated to the visitors.

According to Alexander Wolff, the purpose of the exhibition was the desire for showing people an example of honest and decent public officer and its significant role in the exposure of embezzlement of public money. Endi
