Xinhua, April 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Portuguese Finance Minister Jose Silva Lopes, who died on Thursday at the age of 82, had asked mourners thinking of offering flowers to spend the money on a children's institution, local media reported on Saturday.

The former chief of the Bank of Portugal died in Lisbon after being hospitalized for several days. His funeral is expected to take place on Monday, Portuguese Lusa News Agency reported.

In his economist way of thinking, Silva Lopes thought that flowers would be no good for anyone, and asked for those who were thinking of offering flowers to spend the money on an institution offering support to children, according to the report.

Silva Lopes began his career at the Ministry of Economy in 1955, and joined the board of directors of bank Caixa Geral de Depositos in 1969. He was governor of the Bank of Portugal between 1975 and 1980.

He was also a consultant to the International Monetary Fund, and most recently served as chairman of bank Montepio Geral. Endit
