Zambia to start voter registration in August

Xinhua, April 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Zambia's electoral governing body has said it would commence a voter registration exercise in August ahead of a general election next year.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia intends to conduct the voter registration exercise from Aug. 17 to Oct. 16, said Raphael Phiri, the organization's public relations officer, said in a statement released on Thursday.

The official said the exercise will be conducted at designated voter registration centers in various districts and that the exercise will later continue at municipality centers up to March 31, 2016.

"The voter registration shall be conducted by mobile teams which shall be based at each gazette voter registration center for 14 days," he said.

Zambia will hold a general election next year to choose a president, lawmakers and local government leaders.

According to the electoral body, Zambia currently has 5.1 million registered voters. Endite
