Three killed, 6 others injured in S. Philippine landmine attack

Two soldiers and a civilian were killed while six others were injured in a landmine attack by leftist New People's Army (NPA) guerrillas in the southern Philippine province of Surigao del Sur Wednesday night, the military said Thursday.
Jasper Gacayan, public affairs officer of the Philippine Army's 401st Brigade, said troops from the 41st Division Reconnaissance Company and 4th Field Artillery Battalion were aboard four military vehicles around 9 p.m. when they were hit with an improvised bomb laid by the rebels.
"Two soldiers died and five others were injured. Two civilians were also victimized, one of them died while the other was injured, " said Gacayan.
The NPA, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, was formed on March 29, 1969. Latest military estimates placed the NPA's strength at less than 4,000. Endi
