Major haul of narcotics in years seized on Latvian-Russian border

Xinhua, March 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Latvian authorities have seized 124 kg of hashish, the biggest haul of narcotics recorded in Latvia in recent years, from a car on the Latvian-Russian border earlier this month, the Latvian State Border Guard said Tuesday.

State Border Guard representative Kristine Petersone said that border guards found the drugs hidden in a secret compartment of a car which on March 15 had arrived at the Grebneva checkpoint to cross from Latvia into Russia.

While checking the car, the border guards grew suspicious it might have a secret compartment for hiding people or some illegal stuff.

The driver of the car, a 52 year-old citizen of Russia, denied the vehicle had a secret hiding place, but with a closer inspection, the border guards and customs officers found 124.35 kg of hashish in several packages hidden between the backseat and the trunk of the car.

Latvian authorities are now probing the driver for transportation of narcotic substances across the state border, an offence carrying a jail term of up to ten years. Enditem
