U.S. House of Representatives minority leader concludes visit to Cambodia

Xinhua, March 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

U.S. House of Representatives minority leader Nancy Pelosi concluded her two-day visit to Cambodia by meeting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to discuss a wide range of issues, according to a press statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh on Tuesday.

Pelosi said her congressional delegation was received by Prime Minister Hun Sen for more than two hours on Monday and engaged in a dialogue about issues related to freedom of expression, corruption, labor and land rights.

"The prime minister gave us his view of Cambodia-U.S. relations in past decades," she said in the statement. "The discussion was constructive, candid and useful in addressing the challenges ahead. "

During the visit, Pelosi also met with key leaders in civil society to hear their perspective about the state of free expression in Cambodia.

On Sunday, the delegation toured a Halo Trust facility supported by U.S. funding and technology in Siem Reap province. The Halo Trust is doing work clearing land mines and returning land safely back to Cambodian people.

Pelosi also visited the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage-listed Angkor Wat Temple.

Cambodia was her first stop on a five-nation Asia trip, which will also bring her to Vietnam, Myanmar, South Korea and Japan, according to the statement from her office. Endi
