Saudi bans chicken importation from six U.S. states

Xinhua, March 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Saudi Food and Drug Authority has temporary banned chicken importation from 6 American states for Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) outbreak there, Saudi Press Agency reported on Sunday.

The states are Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, Minnesota and Missouri, in which the authority excluded cooked products or those that were exposed to heat in a way that could kill the virus if they are meeting the setting criteria.

The ban will continue until animal health situation in Thailand return to normal. Saudi Arabia banned on March 10 the importation of live chicken from Thailand for the same reason.

Bird flu H5N1 is a highly pathogenic bird flu virus that has led to dramatic outbreaks in the domestic poultry industries in the Middle East and some parts of Asia.

The first human infection was recorded in Hong Kong in 1997, with almost 650 cases have reported since 2003 across 15 countries. Endit
