Palmeiras sign Uruguayan defender Egidio

Xinhua, March 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Palmeiras have signed Uruguayan left-back Egidio from Ukrainian top-flight outfit Dnipro, the Brazilian club said on Saturday.

The announcement comes a day after Palmeiras' first-choice left-back, Joao Paulo, ruptured knee ligaments while training.

"We saw the need to act quickly," Palmeiras football manager Alexandre Mattos told ESPN Brasil.

"Egidio has been released by Dnipro and will arrive on Monday for a medical."

Egidio made just four appearances for Dnipro after signing for the club for two million euros from Cruzeiro in January.

His lawyer, Marcos Motta, said the defender's contract was terminated due to the club's failure to pay wages.

Palmeiras, eight-time Brazilian Serie A champions, have now made 20 signings since narrowly avoiding relegation to the Serie B in December.

The Brazilian top-flight season begins on May 9. Endi
