8 injured in blast near Cairo university in Egypt

Xinhua, March 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least eight people were injured on Saturday in a blast at a metro station near Cairo University in Giza province in Egypt, the health ministry's spokesman said.

Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar noted that the injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The explosion came as Egypt hosts a top Arab summit that includes 20 monarchs and presidents as well as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Egypt has been facing a rising wave of terrorism since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July of 2013, after mass protests against his one-year rule.

The following crackdown on Morsi's supporters has left about 1,000 killed and thousands more injured and arrested.

Meanwhile, hundreds of police and army men were killed in several anti-government attacks that extended from the restive Sinai Peninsula to the capital Cairo and other provinces across the country.

Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group, which has recently pledged allegiance to the regional Islamic State militant group, claimed responsibility for most of the deadly attacks. Endit
