French President Francois Hollande will fly to Tunisia on Sunday to participate in a nationwide march to denounce terrorism, it was reported Friday, following a fatal attack on the country's national museum that killed dozens and left many more injured.
The Socialist leader will travel to the North African country at the invitation of his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid Essebsi, to join leaders including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, according an official Tunisian presidency spokesman.
Two young gunmen, identified as Jabeur Khachnaoui and Yassine Laabidi, stormed the Tunisian national museum in Bardo near the parliament last week.
They killed 23 people, among whom were 20 tourists from Japan, Spain, France, Italy, Poland and Colombia in the country's worst assault targeting foreigners since 2002 when an al-Qaeda linked suicide bomber blew himself in a synagogue in the southern island of Djerba, killing 21 tourists.
Tunisian officials said the two men, killed in the operation, had been recruited at mosques in Tunisia and traveled to Libya to train with Islamic State (IS) militants before returning home. Endit
