President of the Xinhua News Agency Cai Mingzhao and his Associated Press (AP) counterpart Gary Pruitt discussed cooperation between the two news outlets in the new media era on Friday at the Xinhua head office in Beijing.
Xinhua and the AP should forge a strategic cooperative relationship, Cai said, expressing the wish that the two news agencies will expand cooperation onto a wider range of areas.
Xinhua has been turning out omni media products integrating texts, pictures and videos, and reducing costs through application of technologies to meet the new demand of its clients, Cai noted.
The visiting AP president said his organization has also been upgrading both its software and hardware to adapt to the changing structure of the clients, adding that the AP is ready to exchange experience and strengthen cooperation with Xinhua.
"We never regard Xinhua as a competitor, but as a partner that we can share and grow together and deal with the challenges of a transforming media environment together," Pruitt said, noting that the AP's relationship with Xinhua is more important than purely commercial relationship.
Both sides said they attach great importance to social media and that Xinhua and the AP should share what they do in this sphere.
Xinhua officially unveiled its global social media presence on March 1, after rebranding its Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts under the unified name "New China". As of Friday, the Facebook account got 918,314 "likes" while 1,510,177 people followed Xinhua on Twitter. The Youtube account attracted 48,652 "views".
Meanwhile, Cai said strengthening cooperation between Xinhua and the AP, both important news outlets of their respective countries, can promote the development of China-U.S. ties which has been undergoing positive changes.
Pruitt said cooperation between the two news agencies could be an example for bilateral cooperation between the United States and China. Endi
