A senior Criminal Investigations (CID) officer was shot dead on Wednesday night by hooded gunmen in the latest incident of insecurity in the coastal city of Mombasa.

Mombasa County CID boss Henry Ondiek confirmed on Thursday that the CID officer attached to Kenya Port Authority (KPA) was trailed and shot at close range by two gunmen who escaped without stealing anything from him.

He was shot three times in the abdomen and succumbed to injuries upon arrival at private hospital.

"We have opened an inquiry into the unfortunate incident, where we have lost senior officer. We have launched manhunt for the gunmen whom we suspect they are local Muslim youth," Ondiek said.

He said investigation and manhunt for the assailants has been launched

He said the motive of the attackers remains unclear but investigators are gathering crucial leads. Detectives collected spent cartridges for ballistic investigation.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa has held security meetings involving the political leadership and security agents to address the runway crime in the coastal city.

Marwa confirmed on Wednesday night the incident, saying they are investigating the murder. "We are yet to know the exact motive of the attack so far," said Marwa.
