Bangladesh marks Independence Day

Xinhua, March 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bangladeshis have marked their 44th Independence Day with due solemnity and respect commemorating the historic Liberation War in 1971.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday paid tribute to martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar on the outskirts of capital Dhaka to mark the 44th anniversary of Independence Day.

They stood in solemn silence for some time and paid their homage to the language heroes.

The National Memorial and its adjacent areas have had a facelift on the occasion, and roads and medians have been festooned with national flags.

Thousands of people from all walks of life also thronged the national memorial to pay respect to war heroes.

On this day Bangladesh commemorates the country's declaration of independence on late hours of March 25, 1971 and the start of Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.

The day is a national holiday in Bangladesh, and is celebrated with parades, and paying of respect at Jatiyo Smriti Soudho, the national memorial at Savar near Dhaka. Endi
