German tourist killed in shark attack in Egypt

Xinhua, March 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

A shark attack early Sunday killed a German tourist in an Egyptian Red Sea resort, medical sources said.

The shark bit off the 52-year-old German's leg while diving with his wife in the town of al-Quseir, some 650 km south east the capital, Mohamed al Sayed, Health Ministry Deputy in the Red Sea province said.

The man died before reaching hospital, the source added.

Reasons behind the attack were not disclosed yet.

The Red Sea, a tourist attractive area full of resorts, is a major hub for diving.

Shark attacks are not common in Egypt, but in 2010 another German female tourist was killed and other five Russian were seriously wounded in one of Sharm el-Sheikh resorts. The attack then has forced the government to close off several beaches in the town for a week.

Tourism sector is one of the main pillars of the Egyptian economy which has been battered over the past four years.

According to tourism ministry, nearly ten million tourists visited Egypt in 2014. Endit
