Hamburg picked as German bidder for 2024 Olympics

Xinhua, March 22, 2015 Adjust font size:

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) Saturday announced Hamburg will represent Germany to bid for the 2024 Olympics.

The northern port city was unanimously chosen with 410 votes, and no abstentions, over capital Berlin by an extraordinary general assembly of the DOSB.

Hamburg will compete with confirmed bidders Boston and Rome, and possible candidates Paris, Istanbul and Doha.

Germany hosted Summer Olympics in Berlin in 1936 and Munich 1972 as well as a Winter Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The bid must be submitted to the IOC by September 15 but needs to clear one further hurdle in the form of a referendum. Hamburg had a support rate of 64 percent in a recent survey. Endi
