Britons welcome solar eclipse despite cloudy weather

Xinhua, March 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Millions of people across Britain witnessed a rare solar eclipse Friday morning.

The BBC reported the eclipse in Britain peaked at around 0935 GMT, and reached totality at 0941 GMT.

The eclipse reached at least 83 percent in most parts of Britain, but was not clearly visible due to cloudy weather. Londoners missed the rare chance to view the eclipse -- a phenomenon that will not repeat on this scale until 2026, according to the Royal Astronomical Society in London.

Cornwall witnessed the moment at 0923 GMT, and northern Shetland Islands at 0943 GMT with the eclipse reaching about 97 percent.

The partial solar eclipse in Edinburgh started at 0830 GMT and ended at 1044 GMT.

The 2015 solar eclipse is the deepest one in Britain since 1999. Endit
