Bastos buries San Lorenzo in Copa Libertadores

Xinhua, March 19, 2015 Adjust font size:

Former Brazil international winger Michel Bastos struck in second-half injury time as Sao Paulo beat defending champions San Lorenzo 1-0 in their Copa Libertadores group match on Wednesday.

The Argentine outfit looked set to secure a vital point away from home before Bastos' dramatic winner at the Morumbi stadium.

The 31-year-old sent the partisan crowd into raptures by meeting a Carlinhos cross with a diving header at the far post.

The result lifted the Brazilian outfit to second in Group 2, three points behind leaders Corinthians. San Lorenzo are third with three points.

"I'm still feeling the emotion," Bastos told the Globo television network after the match. "Today we showed that we are a quality team, with fighting spirit and belief."

"Today we had to win to put us on track to going through to the next phase [of the tournament]."

In Wednesday's only other match, Brazil's Atletico Mineiro secured their first win of the campaign by defeating Colombia's Independiente Santa Fe 1-0 in Bogota.

Lucas Pratto scored in the 59th minute with a bullet header from a Sherman Cardenas corner kick.

The Copa Libertadores is Latin America's top club competition, featuring teams from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Endi
