Georgia, U.S. to hold military drill in May

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Georgian Defense Ministry on Wednesday announced that it will carry out a joint military drill with the U.S. Army in May, the first of its kind on Georgian territory.

The drill, slated for May 1-25, is aimed at building closer ties between Georgian battalions and the NATO Response Force and preparing for NATO operations and exercises in the future, according to a Defense Ministry statement.

The joint military exercises will be held at the Vaziani airfield and military polygon in west Georgia, the statement added.

The Caucasus country, which launched its NATO accession process a decade ago, sees the alliance as a counterweight to Russia and NATO membership as a guarantee of stability.

NATO has been reluctant to offer Georgia membership for fear of possible confrontation with Moscow. Endi
