Rwanda to appoint 29-year-old Irish national as new football coach

Xinhua, March 18, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) is set to appoint Irish national, Johnny McKinstry, as the national team coach, Ferwafa president Vincent Degaule Nzamwita said here Tuesday.

The Ferwafa is in talk with the 29-year-old Mckinstry for a three-year contract. The Irish will especially be tasked with taking the Rwandan national squad to 2017 African Cup of Nations finals to be held in South Africa.

Nzamwita said that hiring a new coach is part of the team's efforts to reach laudable heights in the competitions to come.

"We have started consultations with the new coach and he has promised in return to make drastic changes in the national team's style," he said.

The tiny East African nation has never made it to the World Cup and only qualified once for the African Cup of Nations, in 2004.

McKinstry first assignment will also include preparing the 'Amavubi' (Wasps) for the international friendly match against Zambia on March 29 in Lusaka in their build-up for the 2016 African Nations Championship (Chan) to be held from Jan. 16-Feb. 7, 2016 in Rwandan capital city Kigali.

Previously McKinstry coached Sierra Leone as a senior manager, reports said. Endi
