Nigerian troops clash with Boko Haram in border town: security source

Nigerian army and troops from neighbor countries are fighting Boko Haram gunmen to retake the strategic border town of Damasak, security source said Sunday.

A competent security source told Xinhua that the battle is being waged by Nigerian troops in conjunction with the Multinational Joint Task Force from countries in the region.

Damasak, an agricultural town near Niger, was seized by Boko Haram in 2014, when its members attacked border areas in Borno state, leaving more 50 dead.

A military spokesperson told Xinhua that the ongoing battle, which commenced hours ago give the lie to reports last week that the town was already recaptured by the Multinational Joint Task Force. Endi
