Malta International Airport supports 9.2 pct of national GDP: study

Xinhua, March 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Malta International Airport (MIA) supports 9.2 percent of the archipelago's GDP, according to a study on the economic impact of European airports published Friday.

The study, released by the European region of Airports Council International (ACI), a professional association of airport operators, showed that Malta's airport contributes to the employment of 15,300 people and generates 660 million euros (694 million U.S. dollars) of revenue annually.

It also revealed that for every 10 percent increase in air connectivity, the GDP per person in general increases by an additional 0.5 percent.

"Increased connectivity for Malta means added benefits from increased trade, higher investment, more tourism activity and better productivity overall. Being an island, Malta's air connections are crucial for us to remain plugged into the global economy, even more so than our European counterparts," said MIA's CEO Alan Borg.

The study also indicated that Europe's airports contribute to the employment of 12.3 million people and earns 356 billion euros in income annually. Overall, the airports generate 675 billion euros of GDP each year.

ACI Europe represents more than 450 airports in 45 European countries. Endit
