The number of evictions in Spain rose by 1.3 percent during 2014 in respect to 2013, according to a report published Friday by the General Council of Judicial Power.

The report, which titled "The effects of the crisis in judicial organizations," confirms that 68,091 evictions were carried out last year, showing that despite signs of improvement in the Spanish economy, the property sector is still under pressure.

This number includes people who were forced to leave their homes because of an inability to maintain rent or mortgage payments, as well as from commercial properties.

Of the total, 54 percent (36,044) were result of non-payment of rent, 42 percent (28,877) were as a result of being unable to keep up mortgage payments, and the remaining 3,170 cases were for a variety of other reasons.

The statistics also show the number of foreclosures, the first step taken by banks on non-payment of a mortgage, fell by 2.3 percent during 2014, to 80,749. Endit
