Vietnamese coffee has been exported to over 60 countries and regions worldwide, bringing Vietnam some 3.4 billion U.S. dollars in 2014, ranking second among the world' s top coffee exporters, released at a conference on sustainable development of coffee sector in Vietnam held in Central Highlands Dak Lak province on Wednesday.
Vietnam, with over 640,000 hectares of coffee plantation mainly in the Central Highlands areas, leads the world's Robusta production, Vietnam's state-run radio VOV quoted the statistics as saying on Wednesday.
However, Vietnamese coffee sector is facing several unsolved problems including unstable growing scale, increasing number of aging coffee trees, as well as limitations in quality control and processing technology, assessed Cao Duc Phat, Vietnam's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, at the conference.
Coffee was first introduced to Vietnam's Central Highlands areas by French colonists in 1857. With suitable growing conditions, Vietnamese coffee gained a reputation for its taste between 1920s and 1930s.
Vietnam's global success in coffee, however, was sparked following the Vietnamese government's move to liberalize the economy in 1986. Coffee production has since expanded rapidly, said VOV. Endi
