Chinese riot squad leaves Beijing for Liberia peacekeeping mission

Xinhua, March 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A riot police squad has left Beijing to join an eight-month UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia, the Ministry of Public Security announced on Tuesday.

The 140 police officers, 5 of which are women, make up the third unit China has sent to the west African nation, according to a statement of the ministry.

The statement said members of the squad were selected from field police officers in east China's Shandong Province. They passed UN examinations in December after months of training in international law, English, driving and first aid.

China sent its first riot police squad to join a UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia in October 2013.

Currently, there are a total of 178 Chinese riot police members on peacekeeping missions in places including Liberia, South Sudan, Cyprus and UN headquarters, according to the statement. Endi
