Roundup: Jail riot kills 3, wounds 23 in N. Afghanistan

Xinhua, March 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Three people were killed and 23 others injured as prisoners made uprising in a prison in Jauzjan provincial capital Shiberghan 390 km north of Kabul on Sunday, provincial police chief, Faqir Mohammad Jauzjani said.

"The clash erupted at 09:00 a.m. local time in Shiberghan central jail between prisoners and warders which has left three persons including two police and a prisoner dead and 23 others including 16 detainees and seven police injured," Jauzjani told reporters.

Those detainees involved in riot are Taliban loyalists, the provincial police chief said, adding the situation has been brought under control after some two hours of fighting.

However, the police chief didn't provide information about the reason for the riot, saying investigation has been initiated into the case.

Meantime, locals blame security lapse in the prison and the alleged maltreatment of detainees by jail officials as the main reason for the bloody riot in Shiberghan jail.

To bring the situation in the prison under control, a delegation of elders including some members of Jauzjan provincial council went to the jail and talked to the detainees, head of Jauzjan provincial council Abdul Hai Hayat said.

The detainees accused the jail officials of behaving badly, calling for the removal of the jail commandant.

"Poor security management could be the main reason for the bloody riot in Shiberghan prison," the head of Jauzjan provincial council member Abdul Hai Hayat told Xinhua.

He also warned that more riots will take place if the security measures in jails are not improved. Endi
