Finnish Aviation Union to strike on Sunday

Xinhua, March 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Finnish Aviation Union (IAU) announced late Saturday that it will stage a strike to support the walkout at the budget airline Norwegian on Sunday.

According to information received by Finnish national broadcaster Yle, the strike will take place from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and it is expected to affect ground-based services such as baggage handling and customer service.

IAU said that the work stoppage will lead to cancellation of all Norwegian flights outbound from Helsinki on Sunday.

The airline has some 20 flights that is scheduled to take off from Helsinki on Sunday, according to Norwegian's website.

IAU itself is also in a dispute with the Finnish airport and air navigation company Finavia over ground-based working conditions, said Yle.

Pilots of Norwegian, the third biggest low-priced carrier in Europe, have been on strike for seven days since March 2.

The strike was triggered by a pay dispute, resulting in cancellation of all domestic flights in Norway and Sweden, as well as most flights between Scandinavian capitals. Endit
