Abducted 71-year-old American woman released in Nigeria: police

Xinhua, March 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nigerian police in central north Kogi State said a 71-year-old American woman kidnapped at her school premises on Feb. 23 regained freedom Friday night.

A police source told Xinhua that Phyllis Sortor was sighted by a lady who immediately raised an alarm, before the police later came to escort her.

State police commissioner Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi told reporters in Lokoja, the state capital, said the siege laid nearby by a combined team of police and soldiers put pressure on her abductors and eventually led to her release.

The commissioner said no ransom was paid to secure Sortor's return. According to Kogi state police, the men who abducted Sortor once demanded a ransom of nearly 300,000 U.S. dollars. Endi
