Nikkei ends 1.0 pct higher on Wall St. gains, ECB easing

Tokyo stocks rose 1.0 percent by the break of Friday following overnight gains in Wall Street and European shares after the European Central Bank said it will start buying bonds under its quantitative easing program next Monday.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 187.99 points, from Thursday to 18,939.83. It briefly climbed to 18,965.86, the highest intraday level since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 11.44 points, or 0.75 percent, to 1, 535.16.

Major gaining industry groups included precision instruments, pharmaceuticals and brokerages. Endi
