Pakistani PM calls for calm in Kashmir

Xinhua, March 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday called for calm with India in his meeting with a top Indian diplomat as the recent skirmishes increased tensions between the neighbours.

Nawaz Sharif received Indian Foreign Secretary of India, Subramanyam Jaishankar, whose visit has broken the seven month deadlock in talks.

Pakistani and Indian forces had been involved in exchange of firing in recent months along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region and the international border that caused casualties on both sides.

"We must have peace and tranquility on the Line of Control. I was deeply disturbed at the recent incidents of firing on the Working Boundary (International border). The existing military to military mechanisms must be used optimally to check ceasefire violations," Sharif told the Indian diplomat.

Jaishankar earlier held talks with his Pakistani counterpart and both sides agreed to narrow down differences and that ensuing peace.

Both accuse each other of violating the 2003 ceasefire and the top officials on Tuesday reiterated their commitment to the ceasefire.

Sharif said both countries need to start a new chapter in their relationship by working towards resolving their all outstanding issues through dialogue.

Jaishankar also handed over a letter of best wishes to Sharif from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Endi
