Sunderland player Adam Johnson arrested on suspicion of sex with girl, 15

England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of having sex with a 15-year-old girl.

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: "A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16. He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their inquiries."

Sunderland AFC said later in a statement: "Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation."

Johnson, who joined Sunderland in 2012 from Manchester City with 10 million pounds, played England 12 times and scored two goals. He was due to travel with the team to play Hull City in a Premier League match on Tuesday night. Endite
