Euro area unemployment rate in Jan. at 11.2 pct

The eurozone seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 11.2 percent in January 2015, down slightly from 11.3 percent the previous month, the lowest rate since April 2012, Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU) said on Monday.

In the wider EU, the unemployment rate was 9.8 percent in January 2015, down from 9.9 percent in December 2014.

Among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates were recorded in Germany (4.7 percent) and Austria (4.8 percent), and the highest in Greece (25.8 percent in November 2014) and Spain (23.4 percent).

Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate in January fell in 24 Member States, remained stable in Belgium, and increased in Cyprus, Finland and France. The largest decreases were registered in Spain, Estonia, and Ireland.

Eurostat also said the unemployment rate in the United States in January of 2015 was 5.7 percent, up from 5.6 percent in the previous month, but down from 6.6 percent in January of 2014. Endit
