Nikkei ends 0.26 pct higher by break on Japan's pension fund hopes

Tokyo stocks ended 0.26 percent higher in the morning session of Monday as data showed Japan's pension fund still had room for more investment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 49.25 points, from Friday to 18,847.19. It briefly climbed to 18,939.17, the highest intraday level since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 3.70 points, or 0.24 percent, to 1,527. 55.

Major gainers included information and communications, service and pharmaceutical issues. Endi
