Nikkei opens higher on weaker yen, optimism on pension fund

Tokyo stocks rose modestly higher in early trading Monday as data showed Japan's government pension fund had room for more investment and supported by the yen's depreciation.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 99.05 points, or 0.53 percent, from Friday to 18,896.99. It briefly climbed to 18,939.17, the highest intraday level since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 6.57 points, or 0.43 percent, to 1,530. 42.

Major gainers included pharmaceutical, precision instrument and fishery issues. Endi
