2 killed in blast in Upper Egypt

Two people were killed on Sunday when a bomb exploded near a police station in Upper Egypt's city of Aswan, state-run MENA news agency reported.

It is unknown yet if the victims were security personnel or civilians, the report said, adding that the blast also injured five others, including a policeman.

Initial police investigation revealed that the explosion was caused by a bomb planted in a power transformer near the police station in Aswan, one of the country's attractive places for foreign tourists.

Egypt has been facing a rising wave of terrorism since the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the military in July of 2013, following mass protests against his one-year rule.

The following crackdown on Morsi's supporters has left about 1,000 killed and thousands more injured and arrested.

Anti-government attacks have extended from the restive Sinai to the capital Cairo and other provinces across the country, with Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis group claiming responsibility for dozens of deadly attacks that left hundreds of military and police personnel dead. Endit
