French households' consumption grows 0.6 pct in January

Consumption of goods of French households rose by 0.6 percent in January from a month earlier due to buoyant car purchases, official figures said on Friday.
French consumers spent 3.2 percent more to buy vehicles, pulling up household expenditure on durable goods up by 1.9 percent last month after falling 0.3 percent in December 2014, according to the national statistics institute Insee.
For the fourth consecutive month, consumption of textile and leather grew by 2 percent while that of food products inched down by 0.1 percent in January against 0.7 percent growth recorded a month earlier, Insee added in its monthly report.
French households were less interested to buy energy goods over the period during which expenditure increased slightly after having risen by 6.9 at the end of 2014 due to "backlash in fuel and heating expenditure."
Expenditure in goods represents half of French households' total consumption. Endit
