160 pianists qualify for preliminary int'l Chopin piano competition

Xinhua, February 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of 160 pianists from 27 countries and regions will compete to take part in the 17th edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, it was announced Thursday.

The Fryderyk Chopin Institute, which organizes the competition, added the next round of qualifications would take place in April, followed by the finals in Warsaw in October 2015.

The majority of participants represent Asia, including 26 from Chinese Mainland, two from Chinese Taipei, 24 from the Republic of Korea, and 25 from Japan.

Poland, as the host country, is represented by 21 people. Altogether, 27 countries and regions are represented in the competition.

Five pianists were directly admitted to the finals without participating in the qualifications because of them being a laureate of a reputable pianist competition.

In April, a public selection will take part in the Warsaw National Philharmonic after which 80 names will make it to the shortlist. The finals will be held between Oct. 1 and 23.

The International Chopin Piano Competition has been held in Warsaw since 1927, thus being one of the oldest music competitions in the world.

In 2000, Chinese pianist Li Yundi won the 14th edition of the competition, becoming the first youngest winner at 18 years of age at the time.

This year's edition of the event enjoys honorary patronage of the president of the Republic of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski. Endit
