Japan donates 32.2 million USD in aid for Palestinian refugees: UNRWA

Xinhua, February 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Japan decided to offer a new batch of aid money for the Palestinian refugees via a UN task force, a UN official said on Thursday.

Pierre Krahenbuhl, commissioner-general of the UN Relief and Work Agency (UNRWA), said in a press statement that the 32.2 million-U.S. dollar donation "will support urgent relief and recovery needs in Gaza, and emergency aid for Palestinian refugees affected by the conflict in the region."

He added that the aid will also support Palestinian refugees in Syria, and the continuation of essential UNRWA services in the occupied Palestinian territory, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.

The donation is Japan's largest one-time contribution to UNRWA. Japan's total annual contribution in 2014 was 28.3 million dollars.

According to the UN mission, about 14 million dollars of the contribution will go to the UNRWA cash assistance program supporting repairs and rental subsidies for Palestinian refugees rendered homeless by conflict. Endit
