Two Portuguese policemen were run over and killed by a train on Wednesday as they attempted to chase two suspected burglars, according to local media reports.

The chase that led to the accident took place in Sacavem, around 8 km north of the capital Lisbon, after the 23 and 26-year-old policemen saw the suspects run away and decided to leave their patrol car behind and give chase by foot.

The two suspects, aged 17 and 20, were detained later by the police. They had previously been accused of theft and robbery, according to a statement by the Lisbon Metropolitan Command.

The Portuguese rail network manager Refer told Portuguese Lusa News Agency that the area of the accident was "generally inaccessible to pedestrians." Endit
