First artificial hemi pelvis implant performed in cancer patient in Italy

Xinhua, February 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

For the first time in the world, Italian doctors on Wednesday completed an implant of a hemi pelvis into a patient affected with bone cancer, local reports said.

The artificial hemi pelvis, built in the United States, successfully replaced the cancer-hit right hemi pelvis and hip bone of an 18-year-old man in the northern city of Turin, La Stampa newspaper reported.

The operation, which lasted nearly 12 hours at Turin's CTO Hospital, will enable the young patient to return to normal life.

The artificial hemi pelvis was made of titanium and covered with tantalum, a metal which sticks well with human bones, the newspaper explained.

The patient had undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy over the past year. He was reported to be in good condition after Wednesday's implant and ready to start post-operation recovery. Endit
