Xinhua, February 25, 2015 Adjust font size:

A project aimed at eradicating Ebola virus from West Africa through communication was launched Tuesday in Dakar by an international nongovernmental organization, Oxfam, the organization's officials said.

Speaking during the launch of the project that will cost 216, 000 euros (about 245,203 U.S. dollars), Oxfam's regional director Dawit Beyene said "the battle against Ebola is not yet finished."

"Prevention is easy if the population knows what should be done, " he said, adding that "communication is indispensable for controlling and eventual eradication of the disease."

The representative of Senegal's health minister Aloyse Diouf said "the virus is still prevalent in the sub-region and it was necessary to maintain high levels of vigilance since Ebola spreads due to failure to observe recommended hygiene measures."

"We must strengthen the capacities of health agencies to fight against the disease as well as other diseases," he added.

Souleymane Niang, the director for West Africa Democracy Radio that broadcasts in 12 West African countries said there was need for a regional plan to fight against the disease.

"We must train journalists and communication professionals so that they can satisfactorily inform communities about the disease, while taking into account sociocultural realities. Endi
