Medina draws inspiration from Slater, Irons

Xinhua, February 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Gabriel Medina is hoping to emulate his heroes Kelly Slater and Andy Irons by becoming only the third surfer to win consecutive world titles in the past 20 years.

The 21-year-old Brazilian became the first South American world champion in December by clinching the title at the season-ending Pipe Masters in Hawaii.

After celebrating for several weeks with family and friends, Medina is now ready for the opening event of the 2015 calendar on Australia's Gold Coast.

"To win my first world title was the realization of my biggest dream," Medina was quoted telling Brazilian sports portal Gazeta Esportiva.

"I celebrated a lot, but now I'm concentrating and focused on the coming season. Kelly Slater and Andy Irons always inspired me and continue to do so. As I said, the tour is incredibly strong. This will be a challenging and exciting year."

Medina has stepped up his training in the past three weeks with big-wave practice in California and Hawaii.

He said he will never forget the reception from fans upon his return to Brazil as world champion.

"It was incredible," Medina said. "I also spent a few weeks relaxing in Florianopolis and in Maresias with Neymar, my family and my closest friends. After that I had a heap of commitments with sponsors." Endi
