Xinhua, February 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

Rwanda is preparing to host the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which is slated from Jan. 16 to Feb. 7 in 2016, an official source revealed Monday in Kigali.

Rwanda has been selected by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host the CHAN, the Rwandan minister of Sports and Culture, Joseph Habineza said.

Habineza said that this is the third time Rwanda will be hosting a major tournament after the previous two major continental competitions including the African Youth Championship in 2009 and the Africa U17 Championship in 2011.

It is expected the CHAN will feature 16 teams from across the continent with players from their local leagues, the minister said.

According to Rwanda Football Federation, the Amahoro stadium, a facility located in the suburb of the capital Kigali, that was constructed in 1988 by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, with 30,000 seats, should be the host of main matches of the championship while other major playgrounds selected to host the tournament includes Rubavu (North West) and Huye (South).
