Lithuania to seek natural gas imports from U.S.

Lithuanian Energy Minister left for the United States on Sunday to discuss possibilities to import natural gas from the U.S., local media reported.

During his weeklong visit, Rokas Masiulis is expected to secure political support from the U.S. for natural gas supplies to the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Klaipeda seaport, which began to operate at the end of 2014.

"The terminal just starts operating, and it's expanding to the international markets," Masiulis said in an interview with national radio LRT.

"We have already imported LNG gas from Norway, and additional supplies, if they could be provided, would depend on prices and demand in the market," he said.

Masiulis also hopes to sign agreements with gas suppliers during his visit.

Lithuania has been trying to secure natural gas imports from the U.S. in the past few years. Jaroslav Neverovic, the former energy minister of Lithuania, met with a U.S. Senate committee early last year and urged American politicians to ease restrictions on gas exports to the Baltic state.

On Friday, Lithuania ensured the transit of its natural gas supplies via pipelines in Latvia. The pipeline will be able to send natural gas from Lithuania to Estonia.

LITGAS, Lithuania's state-controlled natural gas supply and trading company, hopes to secure Lithuania's status as a regional natural gas trader. Enditem
