Indian left-wing, opposition parties condemn killing of veteran politician

Xinhua, February 21, 2015 Adjust font size:

India's left-wing and opposition Congress parties on Saturday condemned the killing of a veteran Communist Party of India (CPI) politician in the western state of Maharashtra.

Expressing grief over the death of its leader Govind Pansare, CPI held the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Maharashtra government responsible for the killing of the political bureau member of the party.

The CPI said the government has failed to catch his killers, while calling on all democratic forces to protest against such attacks on political activists.

In an apparent referent to the extreme rightwing Hindu group Shiv Sena, the party warned extremist right wing forces that they cannot succeed through such actions and vowed to carry forward the struggle of Pansare.

Pansare was seriously wounded after being shot by unknown gunmen in his residence in Kolhapur city of Maharashtra on Monday. He succumbed to his injuries Friday night.

He was leading an anti-road toll agitation at the time of his assassination.

Maharashtra's Congress party also demanded a central government probe into his death and said it will join a state-wide strike by left-wing parties on Sunday. Endi
