FINA "surprised" by Mexico's withdrawal from hosting swimming worlds

Xinhua, February 20, 2015 Adjust font size:

Swimming's world governing body FINA was "surprised" by Mexico's decision to withdraw from hosting the 2017 world swimming championships.

Mexico announced on Wednesday it will cancel the event scheduled for Guadalajara as part of a massive drive to cut public spending.

FINA said they were surprised by the decision on Thursday.

"The Federation was surprised at Mexico's announcement, given that the investment in organising the championships is largely compensated by the economic and social benefits of holding the event," FINA executive director Cornel Marculescu was quoted by AFP. Endi
