Tokyo stocks open higher on optimism about Japan economy

Tokyo stocks opened modestly higher in early Tokyo trading on Friday, supported by optimism on Japan' s economic recovery.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was up 96.13 points, or 0.53 percent, from Thursday to 18,360.92, the highest intraday level since May 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 3.87 points, or 0.26 percent, to 1,498. 80.

Major gainers included pulp and paper, machinery and brokerage issues. Endi
